I used to like Saiki K as a franchise, but I realised that the whole premise of the show is wrong. I don't like the tsundere trope, and how Saiki's emotions are treated.
The reason why is because of a very bad and unacceptable joke in chapter 108.
Saiki tries to hide away from Teruhashi by hanging out of a window to hide from her. This is treated as a joke.
This should not be a joke, especially given how severely Saiki reacts. What this essentially means is that Saiki's negative emotions don't matter, since it is done over and over again. This is a complete failure of communication.
This use of the tsundere trope is unacceptable. If you can use it to basically ignore everything that Saiki says, this gives a very bad idea of a relationship. I think that this is even harmful because it is promoting bad relationship advice.
The one response that I get over and over again is that it's a gag manga. This is the poorest argument, because,
1, if a comedy makes a truly awful joke, then it should be criticised and analysed.
2, there are many of examples of comedies using jokes to promote a political ideology by hiding it in a "joke". In this case, it's a harmful relationship ideology, but it works the same way.
3, Saiki isn't a gag manga. While it is true that it treats itself in a comic way in this part of the manga, in the Akechi arc, there are almost no jokes, and the ending and the possibility of all of Saiki's friends dying is treated seriously.
In conclusion, I think Saiki K as a franchise is used as a covert way to push a harmful fetish and bad relationship advice. As a result, I think that the whole premise of Saiki K is wrong.
