A Tsundere is just a common trope in anime that just has to do with the characters personality and character arc... how is it a fetish and how is the anime/manga portraying it in that way?
The basis of the appeal of this trope is that whenever a character says something negative, the reader can just say that you can ignore everything that this character says. It's basically a kink based on denial, which is why I hate it. I think that this is how the author sees this. Let's say it's a relatively common trope in anime. That doesn't mean that it's accepted everywhere. Anime is still somewhat of a fringe thing.
The manga supports the tsundere trope and it is not just a joke, and is part of the series.
Whos negative emotions are being ignored and whose ignoring them? Are Teruhashi and Aiura the ones ignoring or do you mean the author is ignoring that Saiki is troubled and just moving on like its a joke? Is that what you mean?
I mean, it's both the author and the characters themselves. The characters ignoring Saiki's emotions doesn't necessarily suck, depending on how the author treats it. Teruhashi and Aiura ignore Saiki's emotions, but in chapter 108 Teruhashi has no way to know, this is made very clear. However, Aiura was being really annoying in chapter 214.
In the panels you showed he's just hiding from Teruhashi and telepathically communicating with Aiura saying that hearing the constant internal voices is a lot for him to handle.
If you translate the original Japanese sentence in chapter 214, it's a threat about making Aiura hear constant voices by using buddhist sutras.
In chapter 108, how Saiki acts is a panic attack, because of how Saiki reacts severely enough, as he said his body instinctually moved out of the way.
Him hiding from Teruhashi out of the window isn't dangerous for him, hes a psychic, he can float in the air... for his character it's not a crazy reaction. When he sees a bug he teleports across the world, when he was scared by nendo he teleported across the world.
I think that panic attacks should be seriously. When he sees a bug and teleports in a world, I think it was handled alright, because I think that the author paid enough attention to it. I think that chapter 108 was cruel and supported the idea that Saiki's emotions don't matter.
Him telling Aiura that he doesnt like hearing peoples thoughts 24/7 and that its a struggle rather than a blessing is perfectly fine, whats wrong with the author writing that? The whole point is that he's a super gifted psychic who has insane abilities that most people would love to have but he hates having them because it makes his life difficult, thats why its called "The Disastrous life of Saiki k". His struggles with his abilities should be shown.
That's not the whole context of chapter 214. As I said, it was originally a threat in the Japanese translation about making Aiura listening to buddhist sutras. However, chapter 214 was filled with Aiura bothering Saiki instead of leaving him alone.
I argue that chapter 108 and 214 show that Saiki's communication skills suck and that Saiki's emotions don't really matter, but instead of the author mentioning this, they make this bullshit narrative about Saiki secretly liking Teruhashi.
Who is getting gratification from Saiki's negative emotions? Teruhashi? Aiura? His friends? The readers or the author? Who?
The people who are getting gratification from Saiki's negative emotions are the author, and some unsavoury readers.
No one can hear his internal thoughts and no one knows that he's inconvenienced by his powers. The people that know about his abilities don't know the struggle that comes with them because Saiki never really shares that or they cant understand because how could they possibly understand??
They don't need to understand his probleems with his powers. However, what they should do is that they should leave him alone if he asks them to like in chapter 214. I think that Saiki struggles with saying no to things, which is a big problem for many Japanese people. However, I think that this manga amplifies it too much.
The author takes Saiki's emotions very seriously and portrays them as such, like how Saiki cared for Akechi from his childhood and lost control when he was being bullied and how he loves his friends and secretly tampers with their lives to help them. How he's scared and paranoid he will hurt them or that their friendship just wont be the same so he distances himself. He's a very well rounded character. Any minimisation of his emotions are done on purpose to show that Saiki doesnt like to be vulnerable which just adds further depth to his character.
I agree with most of this, but I think that when Saiki is unhappy and has a very unhappy face and just doesn't want to deal with people, it's not handled correctly.
Chapter 108 treats Saiki's emotions as a complete joke and there were no consequences for what happened. I think that this is irresponsible the way it was shown. It is very clear that at this point that he wants nothing to do with her, I agree with you.
What relationship advice lol?? That panel was meant to emphasize how Saiki avoids Teruhashi. No one is thinking that he's interested in her and it's clear at this point of the animanga that he wants nothing to do with her.
I believe that when you make a manga for teenagers, you have to be very careful how you treat your characters. I believe it will be taken as some sort of relationship advice because of how it's handled.
He thinks that she's just going after him because shes obsessed with the fact that he has absolutely no reaction to her, not because she actually has feelings.
True.
Later on however, he realizes Teruhashi has come to like him just for him, that her feelings have moved past just wanting him to find her attractive.
True.
And then he grows to respect her unwavering confidence and how she really does have a good influence on the people around her even if she has selfish motives.
True.
The point is they GROW to actually be more compatible for one another throughout the plot. At that point in the panel they were not meant to depict a good relationship. Do you think just because the author is hinting at them being a couple they have to act like one?
They do grow to be more compatible, but their relationship still sucks and is worse than Aiura and Saiki's because Saiki and Teruhashi never talk to each other. Saiki's appreciation of Teruhashi is in despite of what Teruhashi does. When Teruhashi is interested in Saiki, Saiki has an unhappy face even as late as chapter 280, because what she does makes him very stressed. Her being an "adversary" to Saiki doesn't make him happy.
I don't think that they necessarily need to act like a couple, however, I can see that Saiki and Teruhashi is the worst relationship that I've ever seen that is somehow portrayed as being good. They still have terrible compatibility at the end.
