@Urworldprincess You act as if just mentioning the tsundere trope some sort of perverted fetish, that it shouldn't be used at all. Just looking it up its described as a common nonharmful trope found in anime. So please enlighten me as to why being a tsundere is controversial in your eyes. I really dont see anyone else is coming to the same conclusions as you.
I feel like the only reason why the tsundere trope is used is to ignore Saiki's emotions and ridicule them. Many people don't like the tsundere trope because of other reasons, and violence. However, I don't like the tsundere trope because I think it's unhealthy and I don't think it's a good way to analyse characters.
I don't understand how the author is getting gratification from Saiki's negative emotions when, as I've said before (and you agreed), he's written Saiki as a well rounded, complicated character. If it was a fetish following a trope that would just not be the case... he would be one-dimensional.
I think that a fetish following a trope can be 3-dimensional. Even with how much there is, I feel like the author sees Saiki's emotions to be ridiculed and ignored, just because of the tsundere trope.
Um okay? lol who cares how the rest of the world sees it, as a American who barely ever watched anime before watching saiki k, I knew it was based in Japan and understood and accepted that there would be cultural differences and uncommon terms. People with common sense can come to the same conclusions.
Cultural differences don't automatically make a trope good.
Aiura in chapter 214 was just trying to get the attention of the guy she likes. She was talking telepathically to him while he didnt respond back and he later told her that it wasnt worth his time. You calling her annoying for that is just weird. It was a funny bit and if you think about it, it's not like he explicitly told her to stop. He legit just ignored her and LATER on said it was problem. When saiki tells her to leave in that chapter she does, when saiki asks for her help she helps.
My point is that in chapter 214, Saiki's way of communicating with other people failed. Aiura was very annoying to Saiki, because Saiki really wanted Aiura to leave him alone and said that he said he would even go to desert with her.
It's not funny, instead of this being turned into a serious moment, this is turned into some bullshit plot point about Saiki liking Teruhashi. About how Saiki apparently likes people who are true to themselves. I think the author is irresponsible.
Okay? and why does that matter. Do you mean it's a bad thing that he threatened to make her hear the constant voices... seriously? it's a joke. A hyperbole. people say "I'll kill you" to friends all the time. Do i really gotta explain this? I fear you're too sensitive to be reading this.
That's not my point. I think I understand when threats should be taken seriously. Especially when Teruhashi is changing her hairstyle and Saiki is obviously not comfortable with what is going on and wants it to stop.
It's very serious and nothing like this situation and saying that it is is disrespectful to people who suffer from it.
Disrespectful? I think not wanting to deal with somebody that tries to bother you is enough reason for this. I don't think that what you said about panic attacks is correct either. If you look at how he reacted, in literally any other media it would be a panic attack.
The "negative emotions" in question are literally just Saiki dodging Teruhashi and Saiki saying mindreading isn't fun/saying he'll make Aiura hear buddhist sutras. None of which was meant to be taken seriously. Exactly what consequences should be shown??? lmaooo exactly what do you want to happen? tell me word for word how you would rewrite those scenes.
It's very obvious what I would do. I would completely remove chapter 108 and the scenes where the tsundere trope is mentioned. I would make Saiki react in future chapters, like make him bang his hand on something in anger. It's very obvious how to make someone's emotions matter.
I would just do what literally every other franchise does, and make Saiki have continuity for his emotions and have other characters react to them more seriously.
And that "bullshit" narrative about Saiki secretly liking Teruhashi isn't even present in 108 from what I recall. in 214 their relationship had already developed to the point where they had a better understanding of each other, ending in him saying offu to her thoughts.
The offu in chapter 214 is disingenuous because of how Saiki was unhappy with what was going on. I think he said offu because he was just fed up with everything.
Aiura DID leave him alone! Saiki says no to aiura, toritsuka, his family, chono, the baseball team, and probably everyone at least once. In fact he almost always says no but ends up having to do things because of societal expectations, his mom, or his own curiosity. If not the manga just wouldn't exist because he quite literally has the power to avoid everything. it also adds to his character that despite him saying no he still is involved because either he wants to fit in or he cares for his family and friends so he does things for them or pays extra attention to them. Examples: Him helping Chisato and her dad (feeling bad), Him participating in PE, & working with Teruhashi on the play (societal expectations), playing with nendo and kaidou in the snow (mom's influence).
Aiura did leave him alone, but didn't leave him alone until he made it more serious. I think it's better off if the manga doesn't exist, because I think that what the franchise did should be treated very carefully, however it was handled badly. Him helping Chisato and her dad is a good example.
We all know Saiki isn't actually unhappy, he's just acting like that, the whole point is that he acts like he doesnt care about people but he really does. He frowns and sighs and acts distant when hes completely enveloped in their lives and actively trying to help them. Most people in his life know this to some extent. Even the people who don't know of his abilities enjoy his company and think he enjoy's theres. they all have altered perceptions of him too, with teruhashi and yumehara seeing him as dorky and shy while kaidou thinks of him highly and how nendo thinks their best friends. He always looks unhappy it's just his normal face.
I think that that is a dangerous idea, that you can discard Saiki's facial expressions so easily. I think that Saiki does care about his friends and their lives, but he is unhappy because of various reasons and lack of communication. I don't think he is acting. I think that it's clear if you do something good for Saiki, then he will smile, but most of the time he's not like that.
I think that there should be some boundaries for Saiki frowning normally and actually being very sad.
Thats just your opinion. It's not like Teruhashi knows shes giving Saiki trouble. She assumes that any man should be happy to be in her presence and that Saiki is just hiding how he feels because he's reserved and thats just his personality. In her imagination she really thinks she's making him happy.
I agree.
I personally like their relationship because they are complete opposites but complement eachother perfectly. Teruhashi is a force to be reckoned with that Saiki can't even stop and she doesn't even realize what she's doing. I do think Saiki and Aiura get along better and I love their dynamic but thats just because she knows his abilities. If Teruhashi did, him and her would be close too. Also Aiura likes him because of how powerful he is and because he's apparently her soulmate so she thinks she should like him so just keep that in mind. But again with Saiteru, Saiki has accepted her and she's accepted him. Even with him barely speaking she's learned to love his company and even with her selfish personality Saiki appreciates her. I still can see why people don't ship them but I don't see the harm in shipping them or the author pushing them together. Im okay with him ending up without anyone or with Aiura or Teruhashi, but we probably wont ever see that.
I see your approach, and I respect the idea of the author making Saiki K end up without anyone or with anyone. However, what I don't respect is an author messing up a relationship. I think that relationships should be based on utility and actual communication rather than whatever this is, which is why I mentioned Aiura.
I think that Saiki and Aiura get along better because Aiura doesn't have the same pride and same personality as Saiki, not because of Aiura knowing Saiki's abilities. I think that they don't communicate at all because of Teruhashi treating this like a game. If Teruhashi knew Saiki's abilities, they wouldn't necessarily get along.
Sadly it all comes down to the fact that it really isn't that serious :(, if you think someone is going to be badly influenced by this then I would hate to see how you react to other stories and films or how you even exist in real life if THIS is somehow too cruel. People can be badly influenced by any little thing- that doesnt mean artists should limit their creativity and cater to every person in the audience. I watched this series when I was 14, I could very well understand what was being shown and adored every second of it.
It is serious, and I only hate Saiki K. In fact, I think I am being quite reasonable. I can like a piece of media even with its' flaws, because everything is context. I can watch movies like 28 days later and 500 days of summer and enjoy them. I am not saying that you should cater to every person in the audience, and that you should dumb down and simplify the characters. I just think that the author of Saiki K doesn't care about Saiki's negative emotions, and spread this idea to the audience.
The teenagers you're imagining that aren't able to see the nuance of saiki and teruhashi's relationship and arent able to comprehend saiki's emotions would be just stupid people. The author doesn't have to care about how stupid people will percieve his media. If you were writing a story would you dumb down and simplify the characters just because there MIGHT be someone out there who doesnt understand? I hope not.
They wouldn't be stupid people just because of that. I think that it's quite dificult to question a manga and dispel ideas that you've had once you've seen it. It took me years to develop the view of Saiki K I had today. Even if you think you are immune to propaganda, you are never. I think that overall, what Saiki K tells me as a message is completely wrong. If I was writing a story, I would care about making my character blunt and able to communicate with other people instead of this shit. I respect nuance.
