Hi! I’m Louise or Aimee (don’t really mind), and I’m showing you my essay on Hairo x Nendou (or HaiNendou)! Im new here, so this may be a bit much but I wrote it and there’s no better place to share I suppose.
Introduction.
This is an essay on why Hairo x Nendou is undeniably canon to Saiki K. This will be using evidence from both the anime and manga.
Essay.
In chapter 12 of the manga (season 1 episode 3 in the anime), Nendou forces Saiki to go to the beach (Kaidou is there too, of course) and Hairo happens to be working there as a lifeguard. After saving Kaidou from ‘drowning’ the first person Hairo greets is Nendou, before acknowledging Kaidou and Saiki in a smaller text, showing that he cares more for Nendou than the others. Later in the chapter, after Nendou saves a girl, Nendou wonders if she has fallen in love with him. Saiki hears someone’s thoughts, someone’s thoughts that read: ‘I fell for him. He’s amazing… To help people in that situation… And then to leave without even introducing himself… Nendou Riki… I’ve fallen for your principles in life!!’ from Hairo himself. This can only really be interpreted as Hairo falling in love with Nendou for the first time, seeing as he says ‘[He’s] fallen for him’, and how Saiko affirms Nendou’s belief that someone had fallen for him.
Since then, Nendou and Hairo have a sort of friendly rival relationship, however only hairo seems to acknowledge the rivals aspect. In chapter 48 this aspect of their dynamic is shown off a lot, with Hairo wanting to beat Nendou in every event (he ends up losing in all of them but flexibility, where Kaidou beats him) and stating that: ‘I’ve been rather luke-warm up until now…then a powerful rival named Nendou Riki appeared before me…I’ve never been this fired up before in my life!!’ In this same chapter, he lays very close attention to Nendou and his scores, being the only person to even care despite Nendou’s scores being more impressive than his own. This shows just how much more Hairo respect ms Nendou compared to their peers and how much he values him.
In chapter 110 (season 1 episode 22) Nendou is invited to tennis camp as a special guest by Hairo, who had told the teacher very flattering things about Nendou such as: ‘astounding physical prowess’; ‘should be able to place forst in all three major tournaments’; and ‘eventually becoming the backbone of Japanese tennis society.’ He also calls him a ‘genius’ in his inner monologue and still references the fact that Nendou is his only real opponent. This shows how Hairo thinks of Nendou extremely highly and not just with the basic respect he shows others such as Kuboyasu.
In the famous chapter 134, which is set on Valentine’s Day, Kaidou and Kuboyasu (who are close to Hairo) start to suspect that he may be gay due to the fact that he does not have a girlfriend despite being so popular, gave some of his chocolates to them, him looking at Kuboyasu’s body and saying ‘Nice body there… I like you’ (although Saiki says that’s just him having a dirty mind), saying some… sexual-sounding things to Kaidou as he couldn’t do a flip on the bar in P.E. and an out-of-context (although admittedly intense) ‘it has to be you, Nendou!’ in the hallways. He also proposes a sumo match by saying ‘there’s only one thing we could do… get naked and go at each other!’ Saiki later expresses interest in Hairo’s sexuality, saying that: ‘Teruhashi doesn’t make him say ‘offu’’; ‘he seems to like clothes that show off a lot of skin’; and ‘he shows his butt a lot.’ Hairo also thinks ‘Nendou has a nice body… As I thought, it really does have to be you…’ As Kaidou and Kuboyasu watch their sumo fight, they notice that it looks rather like… something else. Hairo states in the chapter that he isn’t gay, but has never been in love with anyone despite his thoughts in chapter 12, although it is possible he wasn’t admitting to that due to Nendou being nearby. However, in the ‘rePSIcled manga’ of this chapter, Nendou says that ‘they [Kaidou and Kuboyasu] almost found out about their relationship yesterday,’ to which Hairo responds ‘But I really wanted to say… our relationship is what it is… I’d even be willing to come out for your sake…’ and this panel is most likely canon. This chapter all but confirms that HaiNendou is, in fact, canon. The ‘rePSIcled manga’ panel shows that Nendou respects Hairo equally and that they are in some sort of relationship. Nendou also seems to acknowledge the rival side of their dynamic, being just as intense during the sumo match as Hairo himself, despite not putting in too much effort during the fitness exam in chapter 48. We also get some insight into Hairo’s sexuality, and he would most likely be mlm due to the evidence from Saiki, Kuboyasu and Kaidou.
Conclusion.
With my research (and chapters listed), I have come to the conclusion that HaiNendou is, in fact, the closest to canon ship in Saiki K. other than SatouHii. Hairo and Nendou seem to think of each other in high esteem, and k believe that they would have a healthy relationship if they were tk enter one.
Thabks for reading if you did :D!
