Long Summary[]

Kusuo enters the classroom of Year 2 Class 3, and is confused. Aren greets him. Shun, sitting next to him and playing a game called “Black Beard: Dead or Alive,” asks Kusuo if he wants to join them. He does not respond, but instead eyes in another direction. He sees Kineshi ask Riki if he was supposed to be at a baseball game. Riki explains he overslept and the team lost. He then sees Kokomi being fawned over by everyone like always. Afterwards, he sees Chiyo, Chisato and Mikoto sitting together in one desk. Chiyo wonders if she should get a job during the summer, Chisato asks her if she wants to join the place she works, while Mikoto foretells that the place will go under in 3 days. Finally, he sees Takahashi handing Metori milk tea. Kusuo realizes everyone is here and finds this weird. More of them notice him and greet him. Kusuo explains that they are all in the same class but normally if one of them is not needed in a chapter they are treated as they do not exist. Ms. Shima enters the classroom, making him and other students to go to their seats.

After some talk, Ms. Shima explains to the class that they need to decide on cultural festival committee members, a boy and a girl, for the rest of the class time. The class raised their objections but paid no mind to it. Kusuo explains that in the previous year, Kineshi and another classmate, Fumi Kasai, volunteered and all the other students expected them to do it again. At that moment, however, Ms. Shima announces that since the previously said two did it last time, the class needs to choose two other students. The class goes uneasy and into immediate silence. Kusuo then says that everyone does not want to say anything in fear of getting attention to themselves and eventually be chosen for the committee. Ms. Shima asks for volunteers, but no one moves a muscle for the same fear. Since being in the committee involves a lot of work, no one wants to do it, however someone needs to do it. They wonder who would draw the short straw and be in the committee.

After a while, Kineshi goes towards the front of the classroom. He reminds them of being class representative and explains he will lead the discussion on choosing committee members. He asks the class if there are any volunteers. Everyone murmurs and Kineshi explains if there are none, they will draw lots. He tells them that he does not want to push this to anyone and they should discuss this. Mikoto speaks up, breaking the silence. She says what is wrong with choosing lots, since it is a good time to do so. She is confident in these situations of doing a lottery since her abilities will make it possible to not be chosen. Kusuo also smirks at the suggestion, since he too has abilities.

At that moment, however, Chisato raises her hand and voices her concern. Mikoto questions her as to why not. Chisato answers by saying she is not against drawing lots but she does not want to participate in drawing them. The class goes into silence at her unreasonable request to be excluded, but then everyone voices their opinion against it. Kusuo expected it but explains that Chisato has an excuse. She reminds everyone of how poor she is, having to work 6 jobs to provide for her family. Everyone goes silent again, feeling bad for her. Soon Takahashi raises his hand, asking to be excluded too, since he had to pick up his younger brother. Other classmates then start to raise their hand and voice their own excuses. Kusuo goes uneasy, since he does not have a good excuse to be excluded. He thinks he can make up something, but there is a possibility of how poor it is. Shun raises his hand on not being able to do it, explaining there is a phantom around and how he should stop it. Kineshi does not buy the excuse.

The class continued to voice their excuses but one man did not care about the situation. Kineshi asks Metori about his excuse since he seems he does not have obligations. Metori does not deny it and says he refuses to draw lots anyways. They argue. Metori explains someone must be interested, puts out 1 million yen (10,000 USD) and says that whoever takes the male position will receive it. Everyone goes silent once again, believing taking the money would be taking away their own dignity. Then everyone starts raising their hand, happily throwing away said dignity. Everyone started fighting, including Chisato, to receive the money. Aren then kicks his desk, states he would be in committee, and many go silent. Metori smirks, asking if he really wants the money while handing it to him. Aren immediately throws the cash behind him, saying he does not need it and tells him not everyone will do what he says just due to his cash. ARen then tells Kineshi to write down his name on the board and the class highly respected him. Everyone cheers him on and Kusuo watches Chisato picking up the money from the ground.

There is still one problem. Kineshi reminds them that they still need to pick a female representative and asks once again for a volunteer. At that moment it appeared it would be difficult. Chiyo thinks how she would have happily done it if the male committee was Shun. Then someone raises their hand, saying they will volunteer. It was Kokomi and knew if she did she would raise her status. The boys forget the pride they had in Aren and the girls felt defeat. Kusuo felt uneasy since he had a feeling this will not be the end of this discussion. Kineshi explains the members will be Aren and Kokomi and asks if there are any objections. There were many, mostly of the males wanting to be partnered with Kokomi. Kineshi is amazed that all the boys started to volunteer, Kusuo corrects him that it is all boys minus himself. Kineshi thinks on how they chose Aren, and Kusuo voices on how everything is decided and it should not change. Aren tells him that he does mind if they choose someone else if they want to do it. Kusuo is disappointed since it looks like they will change it after all.

They decide to do a lottery after all to choose the male candidate after all. All the boys' names were written and were to be chosen by Kokomi at random. Kusuo explains the end result was already clear, they were gonna get the result Kokomi has planned since the beginning. Annoyed, Kusuo says he knew this was going to happen pages ago and he will end up drawing the short straw. Kokomi ends up picking Kusuo’s name and exclaims it. Kusuo explains that the series will now get an anime and humbly requests for the reader to support both.

Trivia[]
