Kusuo asks his father, Kuniharu, to impersonate him while the others throw him a birthday party. Things, for the most part, go well and Kusuo ends up going to the party after his father’s influence.

Long Summary[]

Riki finds himself seeing two Kusuo’s, leaving him in shock and confused. He turns his head between the two of them and then closes and rubs his eyes. Once he opens his eyes and looks back towards the actual Kusuo, he finds that it was a mirror showing a reflection. He believes that was it and joins the others to celebrate the birthday. Kuniharu, appearing as Kusuo, is happy to see Riki and Shun is surprised that he finally made it. Kusuo, behind the mirror, is relieved that Riki is an idiot. Kusuo then starts to summarize the events that happened in the previous chapter and says he needs to be careful to not let his cover be blown.

Inside of the house, Kuniharu is still cheerful that everyone came to celebrate his birthday and thank them. He thinks about how surprising that his son’s friends came to celebrate his birthday and how happy he is because of it. They reassure him, saying they are basically like family. Kuniharu then thinks it is weird for them to not address him with honorifics and how the girls he has not met before, Chiyo and Chisato, came too. Kusuo is annoyed that he has not realized what is going on and believes he needs to hurry up and warn him. Shun asks Kuniharu if it is okay to do a party in the house and asks if his parents are not at home. Kusuo is surprised that they got straight into a point. Kuniharu is confused and tells him that his parents do not live in the house. They are surprised. Kuniharu explains that his own mom is back in his hometown and his own dad has passed away. They are in shock that his dad is dead. Kusuo says he basically killed himself off. Shun and Kineshi, shocked and saddened, immediately apologize to him for his loss. Kuniharu is surprised and asks them why they are upset. He tells them not to worry about it since it happened in the past. They are then surprised at how he recovered so fast from it. Kuniharu soon hears Kusuo’s voice in his head, telling him to go upstairs. Someone asks him what is wrong and he accidentally lets it slip that Kusuo called him. They question it and he quickly recovers by saying he needs to go to the bathroom. Kusuo felt insulted that his dad basically changed his name to say ‘crap.’

Upstairs, Kusuo has finished explaining the situation to his father. Kuniharu finally figured it out and said he knew all along. He had suspicions due to it feeling strange for him that his friends would come and celebrate his birthday. Kusuo says that yet he accepted it so easily that they came for him before he told him the truth. Kuniharu then believes that now that the surprise is over, Kusuo would now switch places. Kusuo quickly corrects him, saying he wants him to continue to be himself and gives him a thumbs up. Kuniharu is surprised. Kusuo pushes his father to the stairs, telling him how is he supposed to act when it is not his birthday. Kuniharu asks him how is he supposed to act like him and mumbles why he has to do it while going downstairs. Kusuo has faith in his dad and figures that he personally will not be able to pay back their kindness.

Kuniharu groans about how he is supposed to act like his son and that he does not know how he acts in school. He enters the room the others are in, appears in a bad mood and says “good grief” many times. Kusuo says he does not say that phrase that much. Kuniharu finds that everyone else feels gloomy and he questions them as to what happened. Shun explains that they feel bad for doing the surprise at a time that his own dad has just passed away. Kuniharu yells that he is not dead. They question him, and he reaffirms that he is alive, working and it was a joke to pay them back from the surprise. Aren and Kineshi lecture him to not joke about that, in turn Kuniharu kneels and apologizes. Kusuo witnesses what happened and says that Kuniharu did not mean it and to forgive him.

Kokomi and Chiyo come with the cake, saying Kusuo probably did not intend to mean it like he did and they should continue the party. The cake is in a cardboard box and the others are surprised that they finished it. While they open the box, the girls mention how it came out well and it looks like Kusuo. The cake disintegrated and they all say ‘offu’ in shock. Kokomi and Chiyo are disappointed, Chiyo mostly upset since it turned out well and Kokomi reasoned that it probably fell over while they carried to the home. Shun tells them that it still looks like Kusuo and Chisato reasons that it still looks good to eat. Riki just sees it and says out loud that he believes that it looks like poop. They immediately tell him to shut up. Chiyo decides to go remake the cake and they tell her to calm down. Kusuo sighs and helps make the cake go back to how it originally looked like. The others argue about Riki’s comment and to calm down, however Kokomi turns around, sees the cake slowly repairing itself and tells the others. They are all relieved and happy of this turn of events. Kuniharu mentions how it looks amazing and accidentally lets it slip that Kusuo would appreciate it. They question him, he starts to refer to himself in the third person, and makes Kusuo himself annoyed on turning him into that type of person.

Chisato tells him it is too early for him to feel touched and Aren collaborates with her by saying they made another surprise for him. Kusuo wonders if it is the video letter he saw yesterday. Chisato gets out the video camera and starts to say it is a video letter. She, however, cuts herself off when lifting the camera, hits Riki’s face and drops it into the floor. The others are in shock once again, the camera is now broken. They connect the camera into the tv, only to find that the footage is corrupted. Aren ends up hitting the camera to make it work, only to make the footage even more corrupted. Kuniharu says out loud that he guesses that they can fix it. Aren apologizes to him, Kuniharu tells him it is fine, but Aren removes his glasses and pleads with him to punch him. Kusuo says Aren does not need to take responsibility. Aren then asks everyone else to punch him too, they tell him there is no need, and Chisato guesses she needs to be hit too if he will get hit on. Kusuo sighs and repairs the camera while they are occupied. Riki wonders if he should punch someone and Shun tells him to shut up. Aren hears the tv, notices that the video feed is up and running again and tells the others. In the video is a stranger that tells Kusuo about their encounter and how a “sunflower seed” saved them from death. The others notice it is now fixed, cheer, wonder if it is a bad connection, and tell “Kusuo” to watch the video letter. Kusuo sighs once again and mentions how he still does not know that stranger.

Now that everything went well, they continue the party and raise their glasses, nearly clinking them. Kuniharu mostly stuck talking with Riki and Shun. Chisato ended up eating a majority of the head of the cake, making Kokomi and Chiyo not pleased. Kineshi hands Kuniharu his present, the statue he made. The video of the stranger continues going. Kineshi and Aren arm wrestled and they all had fun.

Kuniharu goes upstairs and finds Kusuo reading a book in the hallway. Kuniharu is quite happy and says how popular he is, Kusuo looking away from him says he is glad for him. He tells him how the girls fed him and how much fun he had, Kusuo reminds him that the guys also made him kneel and apologize earlier. Kuniharu then asks him if he wants to switch places now. Kusuo tells him that he will not, they can suspect something and he should hurry back. He then adds, closing his eyes and with a soft smile, that if he actually went to them that he would just ruin the mood.Kuniharu tells him it does not matter, he should go be with his friends. Kusuo is in shock. Kuniharu continues by telling him that he obviously cares about them, it is the reason why he made him take his place. He then lectures him that what he is doing is not the correct approach, they are waiting for him and if him being there hurts someone, he should still just go. He starts to leave and waves at his son. Kusuo tells him that he should not lecture him just because he is his dad. Kuniharu yells at him, saying it is due to the fact that he is dad that he should.

Downstairs, the others are sitting at a table. They talk about how this was all a success and how happy Kusuo looked. Kusuo is at the door that leads to the room they are in, and sighs on how he wanted to settle everything and wonders how he would get them to leave. They continue chatting and he believes that if he just does nothing, they will leave at some point. He goes to open the door but stops. Riki stated that it felt like it was off in a way, the others then started to agree. One of them mentioned how it was fun, Kusuo was so open but it felt like there was a wall between them. Others get what they are saying. Another wonders if Kusuo is pushing himself to get along with them, others hope that is not the case. They say he is fine how he regularly is. Others thought this plan was not going to work anyways. Kusuo sighs, saying he should be the one that says that things feel off and enters the room. Riki quickly notices him and asks him why it took so long. They then decide to continue the party and cheer.

In an omake page, the stranger continues talking. He mentions how Kusuo might not remember him since he personally erased Kusuo’s memories of the encounter.
